Analysing North Korea’s official name

With Dennis Rodman’s latest visit to the totalitarian juche regime in North Korea going about as well as you’d expect, I figure that now is as good a time as any to do a (Not very) in-depth analysis of the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Let’s start at “Korea” and work our way backwards, shall we?

Korea?: Well, they’re actually half right on that front. The DPRK comprises approximately half of the Korean peninsula.

Republic?: Um…well….If you mean “Republic” in the same way that Rome was (Corrupt and oligarchic), then you’d be a little more accurate than if you mean “republic” in the modern sense, in which case, no. You’re wrong.

People’s?: Well, shit, I guess the North Korean people would have to be pretty devoted to their country in order to make photos like this one readily available:

This photo was released by the Shiny, Happy Korean Department of Propaganda Photos with the promise that “There is not even a single soldier forcing these dancers to dance for hours on end until they collapse from exhaustion. In addition, not a single one of the dancers’ families were executed because of failure to dance devotedly enough for Dear Leader’s enjoyment.”

Democratic?: You must be fucking joking.
